This is Part 2 of my beautiful 46 year old patient who was referred to me by her orthodontist, Dr. Evan Wilson of Wilson Orthodontics. She was enrolled in the formal orofacial myofunctional therapy program that Dr. Honor Franklin of Honor Franklin Myofunctional & Speech Clinic created after specializing in orofacial myofunctional disorders for over 43 years. Notice the gradual improvement in her facial shape, lips, and chin. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy can enhance a patient’s overall appearance as well assist the orthodontist in aligning the teeth and jaws properly and assisting in stabilization of the orthodontic treatment. Part 3 to follow.

This post is Part 1 of three posts showing the improvement of a 46 year old female patient referred by the talented orthodontist, Dr. Evan Wilson at Wilson Orthodontics . The goal of Traditional Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is to support orthodontic treatment by eliminating the Cause which is an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder consisting of an incorrect oral resting posture of the tongue and lips and incorrect swallowing pattern which is caused primarily by nasal airway problems and habit with reduced muscle strength. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy can correct habit with reduced muscle strength but a referral to an ENT and Allergist on my team who understand orofacial myofunctional disorders is needed to correct nasal airway problems. Once these professionals have assured me my patients can breathe nasally consistently, they are enrolled in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy. Teaching a correct oral rest posture of the tongue and lips and a correct swallowing pattern assists the orthodontist in aligning the teeth and jaws properly and assists stabilization of the orthodontic treatment. It’s a team approach of the patient, orthodontist and Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist. Thank you, Dr. Wilson, for referring me this wonderful patient. Part 2 and 3 will be in following posts.

How long does it take to eliminate a sucking habit???

November 2018

Filed under: Uncategorized — drfranklin @ 1:25 pm

How long it takes to eliminate a sucking habit depends upon FREQUENCY- the number of times the habit is practiced; INTENSITY- the amount or force applied to the teeth during sucking; and DURATION- the total amount of time spent sucking. It took this sweet 9 year old girl 18 months to eliminate her deleterious sucking habit but she did it!! Look at the improvement in her occlusion once she kicked the habit! IAOM CERTIFIED Orofacial Myofunctional therapists know how to achieve this using positive reinforcement and no hurtful dental appliances.

What does an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder look like???

October 2018

Filed under: Uncategorized — drfranklin @ 1:11 pm

This is what an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder looks like … a chronic open mouth posture known as lip incompetency resulting in the tongue resting low and forward against and between the teeth which can negatively change the growth of the teeth, facial shape and speech. The goal of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is to teach a correct oral rest posture of the tongue and lips consisting of closed lips, nasal breathing, tongue in roof of mouth rest posture.

Mini-Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy Program created by Dr. Honor Franklin at Honor Franklin Myofunctional & Speech Clinic

October 2018

Another example of the results obtained in this 10 year old boy’s dental occlusion after being enrolled in the revolutionary mini-orofacial myofunctional therapy program created by Dr. Honor Franklin at Honor Franklin Myofunctional & Speech Clinic concentrating on lip competence and nasal breathing (via the help of an ENT and Allergist on her team) and NO tongue therapy and NO swallowing therapy and No orthodontic treatment yet. It WORKS!!
Note: OMT never takes the place of orthodontics.
